What is restodontics?
Reendodontics, also known as repeated endodontics (if you don't know what endodontics is, see the previous article), is a dental procedure that is performed in cases where the initial endodontic treatment was not successful or the tooth has become infected again. This procedure aims to correct problems that were not resolved or that occurred after the initial root canal treatment. Reendodontics is important for saving the tooth and preventing its extraction.
When is reendodontics necessary?
Re-endodontics is performed in the following cases:
Inadequate cleaning of the canals: If the initial endodontic treatment did not remove all infected tissue or bacteria, re-infection can occur.
Inadequate canal closure: Poorly sealed root canals can allow bacteria to enter and lead to infection.
Hidden or overlooked canals: In some cases, there may be hidden or overlooked canals in the tooth that remain untreated.
New damage: Damage to the tooth after initial treatment, such as a crack or new decay, may require re-endodontics.
Unusual anatomy: Complex or unusual root canal anatomy may require repeated treatments.
Reendodontic procedure:
Removing the old filling: The first step is to remove the original root filling.
New cleaning and shaping: The root canals are again thoroughly cleaned and shaped using special tools. All residual tissue and infection is removed.
Disinfection: The canals are disinfected to ensure that all bacteria are destroyed.
Backfilling: The canals are backfilled with a biocompatible material such as gutta-percha to ensure a tight seal.
Finishing: The tooth is closed with a temporary filling and then restored with a permanent filling or crown to ensure its long-term functionality and protection.
Reendodontics is an important procedure in modern dentistry, which provides the opportunity to save a tooth even after unsuccessful initial endodontic treatment. It is a very risky procedure, because the tooth can be damaged during reendodontic therapy. The damage can be so great that it can lead to subsequent extraction of the given tooth. Therefore, it is very important that this procedure is performed by an experienced dentist with great precision. Although reendodontics can be difficult and financially expensive, its success brings significant benefits in the form of preserving the natural dentition and preventing further complications.
